commissions, commissions

This week has been one of busy mess.  It was full of continuing commission, party buses and design projects. I loved it all!  Currently, I am working towards an original interpretation  for our knit assignment.  My inspiration was close to home this round and I pulled from a personal place.  The subject?  Slumps.

Pattern Pieces

I wanted to relate going from peaks to lows and climbing your way back up. My brainstorming led to the positive route.  I focused on the idea of survival and fighting back.  I want to say it all started with the idea of the black power fist symbol and ended with an ironic conclusion of a design.

I'm also slowly preparing for my maymester trip to that big apple.  This is the best I've ever heard of! New York better get ready for me!

...to the Sweat Shop!

I'm playing with leather!

sketching and brainstorming...

What am I currently doing with my time? I'm juggling assignments with commissions and loving every minute.  In the classroom, I'm experimenting with futurism. I challenged myself to construct a piece unexpected.  I decided to incorporate leather and I've actually enjoyed constructing more than I ever imagined I would! It has a been a true test and I've crossed signs of designer's block but I broke through and I'm excited for the result.

In my free time, I've been taking on custom work.  From men's miscellaneous bowties to african-printed maxiskirts and bandeau bras, these request have kept me moving!  I've been observant of my fellow student body; I'm quite aware of the demand to be different among the crowd and I'm constantly encouraging it through my current projects.

Story Telling

Gather round, gather round! It's time for a little show and tell.  This week I thought I'd share my new storyboards with you all.

"Fairy Hot Mother"
This particular story was pieced together with my new found obssession and tv hit, Once Upon A Time, in mind. Come on, what girl doesn't love a classic fairy tale?!  I think I'm hooked partly because I sense the style of story telling is familiar to another guilty favorite, American Horror Story.  The shows take time to explore each of the drama-enveloped characters, individually, showing you a little of their past and personal baggage progressively.  I imagined what my fairy godmother might look like and I thought i'd give her some flare- new and old.

"Candy Fan"
Recently i saw Red Tails on a college night in efforts to support the all black casted movie.  I hate to say it, but i was so disappointed  in it all.  Despite my critique of the acting, I was happy with the uniforms and wardrobe because it fits right in the category of my favorite eras!  The hats of the US army have always stood out to me.  I personally think the front winged shoes (right bottom corner) would match them beautifully.  What do think of my boards? Hot or Flop? Kan-Yay or Nay? Which one is better?
Who would you name as your fairy godmother?
(mine? Lucille Ball)

St. Elswhere: Escapism

ONCE UPON A TIME

I've noticed the comeback of classic fairy tales and childhood stories has been brewing in this new year
http://rockmyvintage.blogspot.com/
This reminds me of our country's attitude after the initial death toll of the the twentieth century- an attitude of escape.  Lives were lost  to WWI and the influenza epidemic.  America wanted to forget their experience of sorrow and relive happier times.  Fashion mirrored that ideal and I predict it will reoccur in this year also.  Films and television are fixed on reviving childhood characters to help their audience go back to a better time. Popular shows like Once Upon A Time and upcoming movies such as Snow white & the Huntsman and  Mirror, Mirror will take effect in the designing circuit.  All these sources of entertainmment explore the idea of magical existence and imagination. Even some designer labels, like Louis Vuitton, have picked up on this current concept thru use of larger-than-life carousel in the latest spring fashion show.  Escapism will be a major influence on the industry.  After an exhausting war and draining and energizer bunny of a recession, Americans long for better days and fashion will reflect it.  After all isn't this industry here to give the people what they want?

Trend Spot!

After today's quest, I must say i do have some new found hope in my fellow UNT scholars & their sense of style.
Double Bag Boy

Across campus grounds, if you've never learned anything else at all, you have at least acquired one golden rule.  College is survival of the fittest!  Come Monday morning approaching that 8' o clock and you're following schedule for the day, you've got to come prepared! How can u assure that status? Carry everything and leave nothing behind! Nothing!  In this case, baggage is not such a bad concept.

These students carry there education on their sleeves and maintain style by doing so!

" Brown & Yellow, Brown & Yellow, Brown & Yellow..."

Yellow must be the unspoken color of
the season on the streets of denton.
I found myself glancing at mustard tones left and right;
I couldn't get away if i wanted to!
I noticed it also being paired with brown and black neutrals alike.
I admit it was refreshing to see the color as a focal point.
